The Taj Exotica Resort and Spa Phuket welcomed members of the Environmental Impact Assessment Committee (EIA) to their development site on Koh Lone (Lone Island) earlier this week.

The developers, who purchased the land several years ago, intend to build on 15% of the total 136 Rai (21.76 hectare) site and are seeking approval for 121 luxury villa residences at a total cost of 1.5 Billion Baht. A show villa has already been built on the island.

There are currently only two small resorts operating on Koh Lone, which is also home to many wildlife species, including barking dear, wild boar, hornbills and pythons.  The EIA will assess the impact on local wildlife as well as that of the families living on the island.

Taj Asia were hoping to erect a pier on the island for the resort however, a spokesman for the Taj, Phuwanai
'Best’ Wanamakok, General Manager of Wanamakok Civil and Engineering Consultants. commented that they may abandon this idea if it was rejected by the committee, instead utilising an existing pier 1.5km from the resort.  This, he said, would be an advantage to local villagers as the resort would improve the road linking the site to the pier.

The Taj Exotica will be the first venture in Thailand for Taj hotels Resorts and Palaces, The resort will be located on an unspoilt piece of land on Koh Lone's eastern side and includes Kor Kwang Bay, Nui Bay and Laem Poe Beach, the island can be reached by speed boat in under fifteen minutes from Chalong Pier in Phuket.
